If you find yourself struggling with any part of your dog's behaviour, one of the best things you can do is start a training diary.

WAIT!

Don't click back! I KNOW it feels like an additional job which is a waste of time, I get it - I’ve been there! And trust me when I say I used to think it was pointless. But it's really not!

I’ve seen people make better progress when they’ve started record keeping and also, the science agrees with me! Here’s some reasons why it’s worth that extra couple of minutes a day:

  • Progress feels clearer. On the tough days, looking back at your notes will show how far you and your dog have actually come. The small wins won’t get forgotten and you’ll notice the little improvements that are easy to overlook in the moment.

  • Patterns are a huge thing when we are training, and they’ll become more visible with progress tracking. It might be something simple such as a particular time of day, place, or trigger that causes your dog’s behaviour to worsen, which you may not have noticed without record keeping.

  • Writing things down makes you more likely to stick with the training plan, as it keeps you consistent and boosts motivation. Celebrating each step forward keeps you encouraged when progress feels slow.

  • It’s also easier to adjust training. If something isn’t working, records can help you see what to tweak!

So, what do you think? Maybe it's worth a try...

Give it a go - you may just find your dog’s behaviour improving!
